The Story of Joanna (1975)

The Story of Joanna, which was released in 1975, is ranked first among the top pornographic films of the 1970s. In the picture, which is directed by Gerard Damiano and stars Jamie Gillis and Terri Hall, a millionaire begins a sadomasochistic relationship with an impressionable young girl. When it first debuted, it received positive reviews, earning a B- from Pornogmagy’s Robert Feelbrite, who also said, “The scene between Graham and Colt would have to rank as one of the best shot hardcore scenes I can remember.” Since its release, it has achieved legendary status and been inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame.

The Spirit of Seventy-Sex

The Spirit of Seventy-Sex, starring Annette Haven and the illustrious John Holmes, was produced in 1976—the year the United States celebrated its bicentennial—and was directed by Stu Segall. It is the perfect example of historical or ironic porn. The Spirit of Seventy Sex is a satirical look at the sex habits of the founding fathers of the United States, notably Captain George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and George and his wife. The response was lukewarm at first, but as time went on, it gained popularity and was hailed as a movie that went above and beyond in terms of sexiness.

Deep Throat (1972)

Without discussing Deep Throat, which gained critical recognition after its 1972 release, we can’t talk about the best 1970s porn. It is regarded as being at the vanguard when talking about the 1970s Golden Age of Porn because it stars the renowned Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems and was directed by Gerard Damiano. It has been referred to as one of the earliest pornographic films with a strong plot, character development, and production value. It received widespread praise and even received attention from popular celebrities. It was mentioned during Watergate because Howard Simmons, The Post’s managing editor at the time, used it as the alias for the covert informant.

Behind the Green Door (1972)

Behind the Green Door, a pornographic film from the 1970s, was directed by brothers Artie and Jim Mitchell of The O’Farrell Theatre fame in San Francisco. It included one of the earliest hard-core sex scenes, starring Marilyn Chambers and Elizabeth Knowles. The story of a young woman who was kidnapped and forced to perform live sex acts on a private stage while engaging in lesbianism, interracial sex, and a public orgy is told in the movie. Score (1974)

9 Lives of a Wet Pussy (1976)

Abel Ferrara’s first film as a filmmaker, 9 Lives of a Wet Pussy, stars Ferrara, Pauline LaMonde, and Dominique Santos and tells the story of a young New York heiress and the people close to her as they engage in a series of interconnected sensual adventures. After graduating from college, the filmmaker made this film as his first excursion into the profession, and it portrays Ferrara ‘lovingly nude’ and having hardcore sex throughout New York with his then-girlfriend and the partner of his screenwriters.

Through the Looking Glass (1976)

Through the Looking Glass, which has been called a horror porno, combines scenes of incest and trauma with eroticism and hard-core sex. The movie, which was directed by Jonas Middleton and starred Catharine Burgess, Jamie Gillis, and Laura Nicholson, is about an affluent socialite who flees her monotonous existence when a ghost drags her to a sex-free purgatory. To appeal to a wider audience, including fans of arthouse cinema and pornography, Middleton shot three different versions of the movie: two softcore and one hardcore. The screenplay for the movie was expanded upon as a novel by Eileen Lottman, writing under the pen name Molly Flute.

Body Love (1978)

Body Love, a 1970’s pornographic film directed by Lasse Braun, stars Glenda Farrel, Michael Caputo, and Catherine Ringer. An 18-year-old girl is given the go-ahead by her father to give up her virginity at an orgy later in the day. She turns out to be a lesbian later, and the film features explicit lesbian sex scenes. Both the sexiness in the movie and its soundtrack contributed to its notoriety.

Love Inferno (1977)

Love Inferno, a 1970s pornographic film by Lasse Braun, tells the tale of a family feud that goes horribly wrong. Monique (Lolita Da Nova), played by Catherine Ringer, is the primary character in the film, which also stars Dominique Pascal, Glenda Farrel, and hard-core sex scenes.

Sensations (1975)

Sensations, a 1970’s pornographic film directed by Lasse Braun and written by Veronique Monod, is our last selection for the list. In the movie, Monod and Brigett Maier play two girls who travel to Amsterdam in search of sensual encounters. It is referred to as “ahead of its time” and “a controversial art gallery of atmospheric sex situations.” The movie, which featured full-page advertisements in the newspapers of New York City, was screened at the Cannes film Festival and is the first European pornographic picture to become popular in America.
